Grapplers Aim
For Terrapins

Many of the hopes wrestling
coach George Edwards entertains
for the upcoming season rests with
a strong group of first-year men; or,
at least, as Coach Edwards says,
they are strong on paper.

Last season was a success as
Coach Edwards finished his first
year at Virginia with a second place
finish in the ACC Team Championships
behind Maryland. The Terps
have never lost the team championships
while creating a championship
for the best among the rest.

Towards the end of September
the informal conditioning program
should begin. A number of first
year prospects are expected to be
present. Sheldon Zablow, twice a
Virginia state champion from
Granby in Norfolk will probably be
in the 142 weight class. Around the
150 mark will be Lyn House, a PIA
state champion from Pennsylvania.

A number of other young
wrestlers should help to raise the
Cavalier calibre of wrestling in the
next few years. Kim Hatcher at 118
or 126, Wayne Huffman at 158,
and Jeff McCall at anywhere from
142 to 158 are some more of the
hopefuls, along with Chip Childs, a
120 pounder from Episcopal High
in Alexandria.

There are also some prospects
among the first year football
players to help out in the heavier
weight classes. Kevin Michaels, Fred
Maspick, Bill Farrell, and John
MacConnell were all outstanding
school boy grapplers. From the 177
class on up, where the team needs
some help, they could be used.

The returning, already proven
wrestlers, will provide the nucleus
with which to work. Co-captain
Ted Moore and his brother
are back along with ACC 137
pound champion John Pegues,
Warren Clark, John Pitas, Dickson
Brown and Lyles Carr, Pete Faber
and Dick Opp are also returning.
Carr's younger brother Reid is
coming to the University as a
first-year man and is expected to
give his brother some competition
in the 150-158 pound class.

Coach Edwards hopes to get
more interest from the student
body by planning three matches
right after home basketball games
to hold the crowd and lend
support. These matches will be
against UNC, William and Mary,
and VPI.

On December 13 a wrestling
homecoming will be held to begin
to drum up support for a wrestling
scholarship fund.
